Seattle digs digital giving, earns No. 1 rank for second year in a row

For the second year in a row, Seattle is ranked as the most generous online city in a national survey, giving nearly $23 million in online donations in 2012.

Seattle donated more than $38,000 online per 1000 residents in 2012, according to the survey by Blackbaud, a software and research firm that focuses on the nonprofit sector.

Seattle’s online giving increased nearly 36 percent from the $28,000 per 1,000 residents that won the Emerald City the top spot in 2011.

Seattle’s online giving has been on theuptick since 2008, when the city was ranked 7th with $9,600 given online per 1,000 residents.

For 2012, Alexandria, Va., came in second, with $33,000 in online giving for every 1,000 residents, followed by the District of Columbia and Arlington, Va.

The rankings come from donations made between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2012. Blackbaud defines large cities as those with more than 100,000 people.
